Nine new ideas for your next day off

By Brittany Guerin November 6, 2019

My son started kindergarten this year, and coming from his preschool where they were open almost every day to the public school he attends now, I was not prepared for all the days off. If you’re like me, and looking for some new ideas to keep the kiddos busy on their next day or half day off, check out the list below.  As always, be sure to call ahead or check the website to confirm event details.

Swimming – Just because summer is over doesn’t mean that you have to take a break from the pool. The Spa at Glenpointe at the Teaneck Marriott offers a 3 day trial pass that includes access to their heated pool.

Get outside – Take advantage of the nice weather and get some fresh air.  Flat Rock Nature Center in Englewood has several trails to choose from along with interesting exhibits, an aviary, playground and restrooms. The building is open 9-5 on weekdays and trails are open dawn to dusk.

Find something new at the library – Sure, you love visiting your local library for books and movies, but there is always something new to discover.  A few of our favorites: Silent Dance Party for teens at Englewood Public Library, Tai Chi at Fort Lee Public Library, Tinker Club at Teaneck Public Library.  In addition, many libraries offer family passes to museums and other locations in New York and New Jersey.  We’ve visited the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the Newark Museum and Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at no cost all with passes we borrowed from the library.

Hit the ice – Many of us think of ice skating in the winter but the John T Wright Arena at Mackay Park in Englewood is open for the season.  Options include learn to skate or learn to play ice hockey programs, or take advantage of the public skating times offered five days a week. Bring your own skates or rent at the rink.

Find a new place to play – We are so excited to check out the new play café, The Village in Edgewater.   The location is best for kids 0-6 so if you have a child in preschool or kindergarten along with younger siblings, The Village has something to keep them all entertained.

Get active – If you have kids with energy to burn, Xtreme Energy Active Play in Englewood will keep them busy for hours.  For toddlers to teens, there is everything from rock climbing to trampolines, Ninja Warrior courses and virtual reality.

Feel creative – Visit Pottery Painting Café in Englewood and let your creative juices flow!  Select from one of their many pottery pieces available to paint, or try glass fusing or canvas painting.

Stretch out – Who can’t use a little more zen in their lives?  Check out Pure Bliss Yoga in Fort Lee for a yoga class on Thursdays at 5:15 for ages 6-11. Registration required.

Get cooking – If your little one has a sweet tooth check out the classes such as Cookie Pie Baking or Monster Cake Workshop at GoodieBox Bakeshop in Cliffside Park.  Kids can expand their culinary skills while making something yummy to bring home.
